BEYOND THE BREAK

18042026 - Day 01 - Surfing_01_51_51_22.jpg

What happens when the thing that makes you feel alive suddenly becomes unreachable?

A short documentary following Robbe, a surfer whose identity was built around the ocean — until a mental health crisis in Indonesia forced him out of the water entirely. As he prepares to return to the place where everything unravelled, the film explores fear, recovery, and what it takes to rebuild trust in yourself.

THE STORY

Robbe spent years chasing intensity — elite water polo, downhill skateboarding, and eventually surfing. The ocean became his anchor, the thing that gave his life structure and meaning.

But when recurring illness spiralled into severe anxiety, fear, and isolation in Indonesia, he found himself unable to do the very thing that defined him. He came home changed.

More than a surf film, Beyond the Break asks a universal question: who are you without the thing that makes you feel most alive? The film follows Robbe's gradual return — not as a single breakthrough, but as a slow, uncertain process of rebuilding trust in himself and in the ocean.

If I couldn't surf anymore, it would be like losing someone.

It's not going to be a one-click moment. It's going to be a small step forward, step back. Small step forward, step back.
